€2 at the Door: How Arroz Estúdios Keeps Culture Non-Profit

A partner's practice · Arroz Estúdios, Lisbon · TY-CO

Anyone heading to a jam, a gig or a party at Arroz Estúdios, our TY-CO partner in Lisbon, passes the same small ritual at the door: becoming a member. Arroz is a non-profit cultural association, so a membership registration is legally required to enter the venue: €2 for a one-off day pass, or €5 for a year.

It looks like a formality, but it is a model. As an association, Arroz can open its doors to a wide public without becoming a commercial venue: the space belongs to its members, and what it earns stays in the association. In 2023 Arroz reported more than 70,000 members, 230 cultural events in 2022 and €124,000 raised for social causes over four years.

Why it matters for TY-CO

The Portuguese cultural association came up at TY-CO's first small event, Creating the Physical Commons, which Arroz hosted in Lisbon in March 2026. Participants looked at how the association structure can support non-profit cultural activity and soften the profit-driven pressures that push independent spaces out of the city.

For a festival like ABR, the question is the same one TY-CO keeps asking: how do you keep a cultural space open to everyone, and accountable to its community, without turning it into a business? A membership costing less than a coffee is one answer worth sharing.
